Mrs crafting loves everything about the British countryside;
the rolling hills, the hedged lanes, the chalky streams, the suicidal pheasants
that jump into the road unexpectedly and make her bike breaks scream – but most
of all she loves to daydream while crossing fields of wildflowers.

The bluebell stitch
A lot has happened since I
was last here. I got a new job, we moved into a "new" house
that is actually quite old - hard work - but it has a garden and I
found a new hobby! The old crochet is suffering a bit from that, hopefully I'll manage to keep up with both my crafts and my vegetables from now on.
Let me see, what else...
we travelled a bit. Went to Corsica, back and forth to Portugal as
always, visited Scotland properly for the first time - loved it,
especially Skye, despite the rain and hurricane winds - and explored
our current homeland - Wales.
But not all has been quiet
on the crochet front. My friends keep getting pregnant so I have
stitched a couple of baby blankets, bits and pieces for the house and
Christmas presents too. One of my ongoing projects is a throw for the
settee. I learnt the stitch last February at St Fagans Museum (a
beautiful open air museum here in South Wales), they have a really nice crochet club and people can just walk in and join them. The
stitch has the cutest name: bluebell stitch - lets hope it patches
up okay.

The ups and downs of jersey yarn
If you open pinterest and search for jersey yarn or t-shirtyarn your screen will instantaneously be flooded with hundreds of
chunky crochet projects! One of them has been at the top of my to
do list for quite a while.
I loved the idea of stitching up a doily shaped rug, specially if
made from recycled t-shirt cotton. However, to source the right kind
of used t-shirts wasn't easy (I guess I have to find a better charity
shop!) so I decided to buy jersey cotton instead. It is pricey, even
on ebay... Knowing that my regular needles wouldn't be up to the task
I also bought a massive 9.00mm one! And so it begun... My mother
always said: "Don't make your stitch to tight nor to loose!",
but for as much as I tried to please her it would always be tight.
Well, the problem is - if you work jersey yarn with a 9.00mm needle
and a tight stitch you are going to get 2 things:
1. Blisters.
2. Stretched fabric.
The giant doily was looking terrible.

Tip: Make
your work easier without compromising the style by cutting the yarn
in half!
|
Deciding to make my job easier, I grabbed a scissor and cut the
jersey in half. The cutting process was a bit boring I must admit,
but the jersey rolled back in perfectly and I ended up with the
double of the material. All in all it was a good idea.
Working with a slightly thinner yarn was much easier. I kept the
stitches as loose as possible, but I noticed that jersey has a
natural elasticity; so just do your best to make it look good.
The rug is not finished yet. I think it still needs one or two single
crochet rows, but it looks very sweet doesn't it?

PS: I know, I know, the clogs photo is a cliché, but I just had to
take it!

Thank you Santa. Sorry neighbours.
Oh dear, Mr Crafting
outdid himself. I am absolutely in love with my Christmas gift.
Needless to say, the ladies from the bingo hall will die of jealousy!
I am already feeling the
creative effect of these unexpected jam sessions and something tells
me that my new collection will be an instant hit!
Stay tuned.

The one and only.
Heavy steps
announced the arrival of Mr Crafting. Soaked to the bones after
cycling all the way home from the power-station, he closed the door
behind him and walked towards the kitchen while uttering a gentle
“Hello dear” in the direction of the living room. “Oh how pleased he will
be when he notices my new crochet covered beer bottles on the
counter”.
“What an
exquisite creation!” he boasted. Mrs Crafting was delighted with
the compliment. “Deep colour, character” - he proceeded - “how
is it possible to fit the soul of an entire region into a bottle of
beer? Ahhhh.” “Of course...” - she sighed - “just keep the
bottle when you finish, will ya? I need it for me crafts”.
Mrs
Crafting's crochet covered bottles are currently for sale at
Hubbard's Cupboard in Cardiff.

Lace up!
Mrs. Crafting loves this
glorious hot weather, because it inspires unpredictable occurrences!
The other day she went out
for a walk and met Mrs. Gray, a canny old soul with a great sense of
humour and a great passion for real ale. Needless to say that the
encounter was followed by a long pub dinner.
Parties, cinema, theatre,
Mrs. Crafting's days have been full of unexpected events that she's
always eager to attend. Because with just one “pin” of style
she's fit to be seen anywhere!

Newborn Quilt
This blanket turned out to work better as a quilt, and so it is.

Crochetus sylvestris - dry flower bookmark
Finding a dry flower inside a book is one of the things that always gets a smile out of Mrs Crafting.
However, her garden has just started to bloom and to cut of the buttons is completely out of the question. So for the time being, the only kind of flowers lucky enough to get lost in a good story will be this one – Crochetus Sylvestris, also known as handmade Cow-Parsley.

Past Projects: Envelope Bags
Mrs Crafting collects an absurd amount of things and I am pretty sure that sometimes she wishes she could send them all to some remote island. However until that happens all her things, nicknacks and bits and bobs will remain neatly packed inside these envelope bags, waiting and dreaming of their exotic final destination.
Mrs Crafting envelope bags were completely handmade using plarn (aka plastic yarn) and cotton.

The first blanket is ready
This wool was great to work with. As the blanket was growing you could feel the texture of the fabric adapting easily to the patterns without loosing it's softness. I used the Sirdar Supersoft Aran yarn that I found on sale in the beautiful Pandora Crafts shop in Guildford. Can't wait to return there!

on the way
The tea towel is packed, the business cards are done and Mrs Crafting is ready for her first public appearance!

Business card with a crochet shelf edging
Oh my, what an excitement! Etsy UK will be putting on a display at The National Wedding Show in Birmingham and one of Mrs Crafting's items will be part of it. Mrs Crafting is perfectly aware of the amateur level of her work, that's why she decided to dress up for the occasion wearing some brand new business cards.
